September 2020

As part of the Victorian Government African action plan (VACAP), we have been successful to run a homework club for African youth in Melbourne. The program coincided with stage 4 lockdown restrictions thus online zoom sessions were the mode of communication.

The online homework club is a space where students were able to ask their questions and tutors could provide support, resources and tools to work through grade specific learning outcomes. Some students found the transition to online learning very difficult, so we included numerous incentives such as prizes for the student of the month and overall supporting all the students with the transition.

76 students were enrolled, and classes consisted of Math and English sessions each for year 10, 11 and 12 students.

These 6 classes each week were designed and taught by enthusiastic tutors, positive feedback was given about the program and the tutors themselves enjoyed the engagement from the students.

“I found the homework club to be extremely beneficial, teachers were able to show their own perspective in regards to the subject they were  teaching. They took their time to explain, and even summarise the topic which meant that the classes were effective and efficient. Overall 9/10 experience provided, it was during the quarantine and we weren’t provided face to face learning that was the only hindrance that most students struggled with.

Thank you to the team who were invovled in this homework club and may you all get the reward you all deserve”

– Yusuf Mohamed, Year 12 student.

We also held support classes specific to year 12 students. This included:

  • SEAS application information session
    •  We provided support letters to 8 students who reside in the 9 towers that a hard lockdowns was imposed on.
  • GAT information session
  • Chat with VCAA assessor
  • Extra support classes
    • To help consolidate their knowledge and improve heir learning habits, we held extra classes for year 12 students as their final exams were fast approaching.

“I would like to thank you guys, the HW club is fantastic, and it really means a lot that great tutors teach me. They are truly useful and great and show me new things and help me with what I have to enhance by giving extraordinary input which helps me improve my learning. During this phase of what’s going on around – coronavirus and the lockdown, I can’t go out if I need tutors or support but the HW club comes through by having 2 wonderful tutors and going out of their way to help us. Thanks to them and I truly like the HW club and its awesome.”
