With the COVID restrictions causing Melbourne to close shop, we were told that our weekly Friday basketball sessions were suspended until further notice. With the transition to using online platforms spreading across the globe, we jumped at the chance to pivot and adapt a new health and wellbeing plan. This was to ensure that our community were maintaining with their health and fitness routines as well as creating self care workshops to teach tips and methods to deal with the stresses that come with quarantining and “the new normal”. 

 

Mental Health Check In

Mental health is an important part of overall health and wellbeing. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It may also affect how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices during an emergency.

Summayyah Sadiq-Ojibara, who is a certified Psychotherapist and Counsellor, gave a very insightful talk about what stress and anxiety is and shared some effective ways of managing it.

Fitness Series

Once a week during the stage 4 lockdowns, we organised Fadima Aden, a certified personal trainer to host instagram live sessions. For 10 weeks, Fadima created an easy to follow program for our community to exercise in their living rooms/backyards without the need of any fancy equipment.

Cook with IMAAP Series

We also held a few cooking workshops within our Health and Wellbeing Series. 

Fadima Aden taught us how to make a quick healthy snack. A high protein, low carb Banana Bread!  

We also held a cook a long insta-live hosted by our team member, to make a quick and easy (not to mention delicious) chicken salad with sweet potato fries.
