We held our first of hopefully many masterclasses in late January. IMAAP Masterclasses are designed to expose our members to various skills and experiences. To kickstart this initiative, we thought a self defence workshop would be a perfect fit as some of our female participants have voiced concerns about not being able to defend themselves if attacked. This is a legitimate concern for our members as they are young black females, some of whom, are visibly Muslim.
Majority of the concern was surrounded by the passing of a young International student, Aya Masarwe, who was recently attacked as she was headed home.
The masterclass was compact with sage advice and life saving techniques. Our amazing instructors taught the girls ways to be aware of their surroundings such as:
– not wearing earphones whilst walking alone
– try to walk in well lit places with people around and avoid dim/dark areas like alleyways, streets
The girls also learnt how to protect themselves with items like; pins, handbags, heels, keys and even their own voice. Multiple different holds an attacker can use were demonstrated and ways to combat them were taught. Some girls had a little too much fun with these exercises than others. This turned out to be a very informative and fun masterclass.
Missed out on this masterclass? Having serious FOMO? Stay tuned for our next self-defence masterclass.
“I felt like this masterclass really taught me a lot about safety but was also really fun!”
